Introduction
Below we republish a solidarity appeal for Cuban Marxist dissident Frank Garcia Hernandez and his comrades jailed for participating in the recent protests, signed by left leaders internationally. Solidarity Appel for Cuban Marxist dissident Frank Garcia Hernandez and his comrades
For years, indeed decades, we have denounced the blockade imposed by the US authorities against Cuba. We have denounced and continue to denounce the various policies and measures adopted by Washington since 1959-1960 to isolate, destabilise and attack Cuba. We are anti-imperialists and convinced internationalists.
We were therefore very concerned to learn of the arrest during a march of protest in Havana on 11 July of Frank Garcia Hernandez, Cuban historian and Marxist, Leonardo Romero Negrín, young socialist studying physics at the University of Havana, Maykel González Vivero, director of Tremenda Nota and Marcos Antonio Pérez Fernández, pre-university student. Frank Garcia Hernandez is an important scholar who has achieved a worldwide reputation for his work on reevaluating the history of the Cuban left and organising an international congress on Trotsky in Havana in 2019.
We call for the unconditional release of Frank and all his comrades and for respect for the democratic rights of all the Cuban people.
As the revolutionary Rosa Luxembourg stated in 1918:
without a free and untrammeled press, without the unlimited right of association and assemblage, the rule of the broad masses of the people is entirely unthinkable.”
Freedom only for the supporters of the government, only for the members of one party — however numerous they may be — is no freedom at all. Freedom is always and exclusively freedom for the one who thinks differently. Not because of any fanatical concept of “justice” but because all that is instructive, wholesome and purifying in political freedom depends on this essential characteristic, and its effectiveness vanishes when “freedom” becomes a special privilege.”

Depuis des années, voire des dizaines d’années, nous avons dénoncé le blocus imposé par les autorités des États-Unis contre Cuba. Nous avons dénoncé et nous continuons à dénoncer les différentes politiques et mesures adoptées depuis 1959-1960 par Washington pour isoler, déstabiliser et agresser Cuba. Nous sommes des anti-impérialistes et des internationalistes convaincu·es.
Nous sommes très préoccupés par l’arrestation, lors d’une marche de protestation à La Havane le 11 juillet 2021, de Frank Garcia Hernandez, historien et marxiste cubain, Leonardo Romero Negrin, jeune étudiant socialiste en physique à l’université de La Havane, Maykel Gonzalez Vivero, directeur de Tremenda Nota et Marcos Antonio Perez Fernandez, étudiant pré-universitaire. Frank Garcia Hernandez est un chercheur important qui a acquis une réputation mondiale pour son travail de réévaluation de l’histoire de la gauche cubaine et l’organisation d’un congrès international sur Trotsky à La Havane en 2019.
Nous appelons à la libération inconditionnelle de Frank et de tous ses camarades et au respect des droits démocratiques de l’ensemble du peuple cubain.
Comme l’affirmait la révolutionnaire Rosa Luxembourg en 1918: « Sans une presse libre et dégagée de toute entrave, si l’on empêche la vie des réunions et des associations de se dérouler, la domination de vastes couches populaires est alors parfaitement impensable. » (La révolution russe, in Œuvres II, Petite Collection Maspero, 1971, p. 82). Elle ajoutait : « La liberté pour les seuls partisans du gouvernement, pour les seuls membres d’un parti -aussi nombreux soient-ils- ce n’est pas la liberté. La liberté, c’est toujours au moins la liberté de celui qui pense autrement. Non pas en vertu du fanatisme de la ’’justice” mais parce que tout ce que la liberté comporte d’instructif, de salutaire et de purifiant dépend de ce principe et cesse d’être efficace lorsque la ’’liberté » devient un privilège. » (p.83)

Desde hace años, en realidad también desde hace décadas, denunciamos el bloqueo impuesto por las autoridades de Estados Unidos contra Cuba. Hemos denunciado y seguimos denunciando las diversas políticas y medidas adoptadas por Washington desde 1959-1960 para aislar, desestabilizar y atacar a Cuba. Somos antiimperialistas e internacionalistas convencidos.
Estamos muy preocupados por la detención durante una marcha de protesta en La Habana el 11 de julio de 2021, de Frank Garcia Hernandez, historiador y marxista cubano, de Leonardo Romero Negrín, joven socialista estudiante de Física de la Universidad de La Habana, Maykel González Vivero, director de Tremenda Nota y Marcos Antonio Pérez Fernández, estudiante de Preuniversitario que fueron detenidos el domingo 11 de julio de 2021 durante una manifestación en La Habana. Frank García Hernández es un importante estudioso que se ha ganado el reconocimiento mundial por su trabajo de revalorización de la historia de la izquierda cubana y la organización de un congreso internacional sobre Trotsky en La Habana en 2019.
Pedimos la liberación incondicional de Frank y de todos sus compañeros y el respeto de los derechos democráticos de todo el pueblo cubano.
Como afirmó la revolucionaria Rosa Luxemburgo en 1918:
«Es un hecho conocido e indiscutible que es imposible pensar en un gobierno de las amplias masas sin una prensa libre y sin trabas, sin el derecho ilimitado de asociación y reunión.» Rosa Luxemburgo, Obras escogidas, 11 de 17. Rosa Luxemburgo agregaba: «La libertad solamente para los partidarios de un gobierno, solamente para los miembros de un partido- tan numerosos como sean- no es libertad. La libertad, es siempre, al menos, la libertad del que piensa diferente. No por un fanatismo de «justicia» sino porque todo lo que la libertad comporta de instructivo, de saludable y de purificante depende de ese principio, y deja de ser eficaz cuando la «libertad» se convierte en un privilegio.» Ibid. p.396.
