Fainan Lakha, a member of NYC-DSA’s Citywide Leadership Committee, wrote an article on September 25 for The Call, the publication of the DSA Bread & Roses caucus, arguing candidates who seek the endorsement of DSA should themselves have to endorse Bernie Sanders. In Fainanʼs view, the line between Bernie and all other Democratic Party candidates for president 2020, including Elizabeth Warren on the left of the rest of the field, is a “class struggle” approach versus an approach of trying to reach a class compromise.
Sam Lewis counters these arguments on the DSA Socialist Majority caucuses blog on September 28. Sam argues that DSA doesnʼt need “litmus tests because our members are able to arrive at sound conclusions through principled debate and a democratic process.” Sam also believes that the real intention of this proposal is to put pressure on Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) to not endorse Warren, while the real power to have an impact on AOC lies within building roots on the ground in Queens and the Bronx.
